I plan on coming up the next weekend. I see the free disposal at red hill and will do a haul then.

Folks in the other part of the Sierra get free pick up of needles and brush if they are bagged and placed at the end of their driveways.

I hauled about 3 yards to millers before they stopped taking needles. I have about 3 more to go. I have thought about using a metal barrel with vent holes to burn. Not only could you control the burn completely but also the controlled heat would make cleaner smoke. I prefer not to burn as well.

Determineing how much yard waste is on a lot is pretty much impossible. We have one cabin in BTV that’s about 3/4 acre. We usually burn and the total after a normal winter is about 8 or 9 yards. We bought a “fixer” cabin last year in Dortington Meadows and the lot had not been cleaned in over 30 years. Between our burning before they stopped burning for the summer, a 30 yard bin and what we took to Brian Rawley’s, we took at least 70 yards, probably more. That lot is about 1/3 acre. We clean the entire lots at both places, but not down to the dirt.

I’ve been using Dan Lamm to clean my lot. He’s a member of CalFire, so he knows what is required and does a good job. Cost is about $300 plus the disposal fee.

Starting to think about this year’s clean up. We’ve burned in the past but are thinking to rent a bin given our calendar… how many yards of needles will a 1/3acre produce? I realize there are many factors but if you do your yard diligently every year and have a mix of cedar and pine, can you get away with the 3yd bin or is the 20yd bin needed? I’m guessing the sweet spot is just between.

Anyone have data to share on the cost for hiring someone else to do the deed?

Last weekend we raked all day, then burned from 7pm to 10pm. That took care of about 2/3 of the pile. The next day I loaded the remaining pile into my van and took it to Rowley’s. He carefully measured my load at just under 2 cubic yards and charged me $11.
I’ve decided that if you can’t burn during the day, while you are raking, it doesn’t make sense to stay up at night and sit there just to feed the fire (when you can only burn at night). Even if you have lots of “cold drinks”.
Next time, I will haul everything to Rowley’s and be done with it…
And anyone who burns, knows that the pile stays hot for 2 days afterwards, so you have to keep an eye on it…or soak it good….

CalWaste took over the business this past year. The rules have changed a bit on the bins. For years now I have gotten a 20 yard bin and they would leave it for as long as I needed, I would call for pick up when I was done. New rule is you only get it for 1 week. If you need it longer they charge you per day extra. Cost has also gone up like everything else in life.

I think you can get a debris box for needles and such from Cal-Waste, 795-1532, Mon-Fri 7:00 am to 4:00 pm

We are going to in BTV next week and need yard bins — who is still in the business? Also, what is the dumping fee at Rowley’s
