Yes, it is a Cal Trans facility. You’re right, the current buildings are set back from the cabins, and their height is much lower. We’ve never had a problem with Cal Trans as a neighbor. We hear some back-up beeping occasionally, but it’s a welcome sound during snow storms. Unfortunately, this building was not subject to public review. No notices, no planning review, not the usually process for a building permit. It’s in the county, but it’s owned by the State, which doesn’t need to conform to County regulations. The County was not contacted relative to this project.
Assemblymember Frank Bigelow and State Senator Tom Berryhill are assisting in our effort to mitigate the building with landscaping.November 13, 2014 at 11:54 am #2668HardydnaParticipantIs that your resident midget, Tom, standing in front of it to make it look tall? Sorry , joke is not politically correct. We do sympathize as we have similar concern regarding the lot next to us, on the highway side, is owned by Sierra Pacific all the way to the fire house. Before building we confirmed it is zoned Forest / logging. The county lady said no construction allowed with that zoning but we all know things can change. Same with the nice forest behind us. SP all the way to the River. I suppose you have seen the tree markings. Wishing you both the best for the Holiday Season…. Don and Arline Hardy

Not that it makes any difference, the building is ugly. Maybe they are planning on covering it in something more rustic??? We just saw it two days ago while driving by. Their older buildings are no prettier, but are away from the homes.
I also just saw the new FS ranger station off Hwy 4, just behind Hokan Circle. At least they are making that building look like a big lodge.

Seriously, this thing is about 10 yards from our property line. With our CC&Rs we couldn’t put up a fence. But, now we have no need for a fence. We’ve got a brick wall that blocks the sun!! Here’s a view from our back lot.

bldg!November 9, 2014 at 4:46 pm #2648rswheeler1ParticipantThat thing is HUGE! Where is it? I don’t know where the Cal Trans facility is.

November 9, 2014 at 1:24 pm #2643CathieParticipantWe came up to our cabin to discover a humungous building erected at the Cal Trans facility. Our property abuts the building and our concern is the intrusiveness on our backyard and the devaluation of surrounding properties. As next door neighbors, we were not notified of this project. We were not told the planned use for this building, the hours of use, the mitigation plans for water run off (our property slopes down from the building), nor were we aware of how huge this building would be on completion. It dwarfs the other buildings on Cal Trans property and the cabins on surrounding properties. For this rural location, it is truly grotesque.
Knowing Cal Trans is a state department and is typically not subject to local planning regulations, we may have little recourse. Yet, we have requested in writing mitigation of this building, such as landscaping, irrigation and a paint color which blends into the surrounding forest. Our request is a reasonable one. If anyone else has concerns about this development, please contact me. -
