fyi, I was able to hook up and get my old Verizon network extender to work in BTV, so I now have Verizon cell service at our cabin! These were those boxes which worked for awhile, then stopped working after Verizon/Golden State could not agree contractually. But after I heard that Verizon purchased Golden State, I brought it out and set it up, and it worked!

I made calls Sat in Arnold (3g/1x, 3-bar connection) and Sunday on Bigfoot Circle (3g, solid 5-bars!). I get a steady 3g/3-bars near the corner of Ottawa and Natchez. Very spotty elsewhere (that I go in BTV).

July 6, 2014 at 8:14 am #2117allenParticipantThere have been several occasions when I have trouble in Arnold. It’s “usually” ok but sometimes not. Sometimes my iPhone shows three bars with 3G but as soon as I try to make a call, the signal drops to one bar with 1X (no data with 1X). Frustrating at best. Hopefully this old Golden State cell phone network will end up in Milton and Verizon will upgrade the entire system.

July 5, 2014 at 8:58 pm #2115K6OAKParticipantWe have a 3G phone using the Verizon network. We were up in Arnold Tues-Thurs this past week and had no problems making/taking phone calls.

But to be clear, I’m talking about when in Arnold. I never expect coverage in BTV. We’ve used Verizon for years with no problems calling out in Arnold and bear valley. 3G is fine, receiving calls fine, but we can no longer call out. This has been an issue for weeks now and it’s all phones and cell phone makes in our family. I’d appreciate knowing if anyone else is experiencing this new problem.
July 5, 2014 at 7:38 am #2111bigtreestechmanKeymasterfyi, Golden State Cellular has been purchased by Verizon so there is no sort of contractual issue that would arise.
I suspect that the resources available in our local cell towers have been overwhelmed due to the huge increase in population this weekend. The mere indication of signal strength does not mean that the tower has adequate resources to handle all the calls coming in and going out. Since text messaging requires far less resources and can be delayed and/or repeated they are more likely to get through.
joeJuly 4, 2014 at 9:55 pm #2110FlyfishrParticipantWelcome to Big Trees Village. Cellular coverage is spotty at best – regardless of what Verizon claims. A friend with an Iphone with Verizon service has been able to make and receive calls but with poor quality reception and transmission. My antique(?) Samsung phone is useless at my place even though Verizon shows me within the coverage area. That is why I keep my land line – at about $30/month to make about 4-5 calls per year. I worry that if I ever cancel the land line, that will be when I fall off the roof and break my neck, and the wife will have to go looking for a phone to get someone to cart my broken body away.
July 4, 2014 at 6:51 pm #2109DaveTParticipantHas anyone been experiencing problems making cell phone calls recently (on Verizon) when you have a good connection, like in Arnold? We can receive calls and texts and get data no problem, but cannot call out. At first I thought it was just my phone but since we have such a weak signal in btv, I didn’t try calling much and didn’t want to spend the typical hours on the phone with Verizon.
Now, I find no one in our family can call out so I finally contacted tech support. They bad no idea what the issue is and no promise on when they can resolve. I suspect its at least partly an issue with golden state cellular or their interaction with Verizon, but who knows. If there are others with the problem, it might help getting resolution.
