I had ash away out a couple weeks ago to clean 3 chimneys. They were last cleaned about 15 years ago. He said they didn’t need it, less than 1/8″ of soot and replaced 2 caps instead. vey honest. set for yearly fall roof blow off of pine needles.

Ash Away has always been easy to work with and prompt in their servicing. And great cleaning services, too. Our old wood cookstove never worked so well after then thoroughly cleaned it several years ago. No more smokey morning trying to light the fire!

Assuming there’s enough wet smoke coming up your chimney to cause significant build up on your cap, the cap will be the least of your concerns (and I’m not even going to comment on your cleaning methods). As a neighbor, I’d strongly suggest you get a chimney sweep in there sooner than later before your (inevitable) chimney fire affects some of the rest of us too.

Due to some bureaucrats infinite wisdom, you will find that these plug up easier. Hopefully, you can have line of sight to it. I use a bb gun to dislodge any creosote that may build up.
November 12, 2014 at 6:12 pm #2664JoanTomParticipantPaul Bertini replaced ours a couple years ago.

We were very pleased with the quality of their fireplace insert installation which also required a new chimney pipe and cap. Number is (209) 728-3303.

November 12, 2014 at 4:31 pm #2661LittleRedParticipantI’ve noticed that the cap to the chimney on our wood-burning stove has been smashed (most likely by falling snow from a tall pine tree); the screening has been completely displaced and the lid now sits directly upon the chimney.
Does anyone have any recommendations on who might do this type of work? Our roof is steeply sloped and the top of the chimney is WAY up there. Also, would I have to acquire a new cap for the person to install? Where might I do that?
Thanks!
