    After reviewing my notes:
C21 and Teri were/had the best cabins of who/what we saw. ‘Best’ to us meant clean and well-outfitted with kitchen supplies. We weren’t looking for fancy interiors or flatscreens.

    DonFry had the not-well-kept cabins.

Coldwell/Action failed to meet us as planned so ability to be professional seemed in doubt.

Barry Ward was late to reply to inquiries, we never saw their offerings. Agent was professional and apologetic about missed/slow reply and followed up to make sure we had closed a lease and were no longer in need.

Other agencies never responded: might not deal with season leases?

We started renting in mid 2012, so have a year and a half under our belt (using Century 21). Issues have been relatively small (spots on rug, missing items such as laundry basket, dog dishes) but renters for the most part have been good. If you’re a picky person, you won’t like it. Dishes/bowls/pots/utensils are in a different cupboard every time you come up. If you’re a distrustful person, you won’t like it because you’ll worry about people running off with stuff. But I trust people for the most part, and have gotten used to the little problems. The upside is extra $$, which we’ve used in part to upgrade (new TV, DVD, blankets, bedspreads) over time to make the cabin more inviting and cozy. Tax-wise, part of the maintenance/repair/utility costs can be taken from the income. And, getting good reviews from guests about their stay at your cabin is satisfying.

I’ve seen two very shy deer near our home in Unit 3. Great photo of the fox – thanks for sharing.

So with the weather so warm for so long, I was wondering if a crazy man could bring a kayak to Lake Union. Would I find a frozen lake or open water? And any idea of the condition of the road?

    TIA,

    Carl

Dang. Ok. Anybody been to Spicer lately? …same question as ‘dpalme’ (my better half).

I hike to the Lake Alpine boat ramp twice a week to check a pump station. I hiked it yesterday and there was several long stretches of blacktop showing beyond the road closure gate. Where there was snow cover on the road it was rock hard and in places sheet ice from the melt/freeze cycle. Off the road there was a punchy 1/2″ crust over 3-5″ of snow. The only fresh tracks I’ve been seeing are other hikers, and sometimes a snowshoe track. It doesn’t look like the snowmobilers enjoy these conditions as I’ve not seen any indication of them in two weeks or longer.
About 2″ of heavy snow fell yesterday afternoon, but when I hike in tomorrow I’ll do so in boots rather than snow shoes. I don’t how the coverage would be to the top of Inspiration Point as I haven’t been past our pump station at the Chickaree day use area at the east end of the lake.
Although some of the longer range forecasts were hinting of a change in the pattern and talking of some weather for MLK weekend, they backed off of that yesterday. I think I would plan on a hike at lower elevations.

    Hi all –

we’re planning to come up over MLK weekend and had hopes of doing a snowshoe trip ’round Lake Alpine and up to the top of Inspiration Point. While Bear Valley XC is bullish about snow, I’m wondering if it’s possible to do some shoeing or should we plan on a hike somewhere down the hill?

If only the Sandy-Cam went that far east! Am also wondering how many snowmobilers are out as well.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks to all for the comments and well taken under consideration.

I guess the next question is what positive experiences or benefits have any of you experienced as a result of renting?

    Thanks for the comments.

We don’t rent, but have friends that do. Be prepared for silly things like stolen kitchen spoons and small electronics (alarm clocks, irons, etc.). To major issues like maggots/fleas suddenly appearing in the family room carpeting (and yes this was after a “professional” cleaning). Urghh. Seems like lots of work for a minimal offset of costs…

I would mount it high on a tree (or other structure) with no lower limbs that can be climbed…use an extension ladder….not many hikers carry one of those around….Good Luck!

No experience personally, but regarding downsides: I’ve heard that renters and hot tubs often don’t do well together. The salesman at the hot tub store told a funny story of a clogged pump. The renters had tried to poach eggs in the tub. A sobering failure!
