Anyone know how to reach Will Slankard (Bill Slankard’s son) of Calaveras Climate Control? We have used him for years and cannot find a working number or information on how to reach him.
If he has left the area, who might you reccommend for heater issues?

I have used The Red Store in Murphys for fireplace (traditional) repair in the past. If they don’t repair propane-based they may know of someone. Telephone:209-728-3303. Email: theredstore@att.net

Ebbetts Pass Gas might be another source for repair or referral.

Our Jotul propane fireplace needs repair. Lights up and goes out after a few minutes. I need a referral for a repair person. Thanks in advance.

Woodpeckers have always been an issue at our place- but last year for the first time flying squirrels decided our place was a great place to nest. We had several that came through into the cabin. Good times!

Re: tree mortality: if the county is going to take down a tree, it’s marked CC 123, meaning Calaveras County, and a number assigned to the tree to be removed.

I would like to have an overhang constructed in the back of my house in Big Trees, just outside the sliding door. Approximate size would be 12″ X 8″. Can anyone make any recommendations for someone to come out and install one?

    Thanking you in advance.

For my first 15 years in Big Trees I never had an issue with wood peckers. Then they decided my house was a great place to nest. ARGH! I put up scare tape and it worked. However with sun and wind the tape will deteriorate and fall apart. So I always replace the tape each Spring. But one year I got delayed, the tape had deteriorated, and like magic the wood peckers were back as soon as the tape was gone. Now I make a serious effort to replace the scare tape each Spring. I prefer the multifaceted reflective tape. I buy it on Amazon. See photo.

I had a cabin on Tahos and I used CD’s. Seemed to work.

I’ve put up scare tape in several areas of the cabin and it seems to work for me. Several neighbors have the tape up. You may be able to get the tape at Ace. I’ve heard that you can also use CDs.

Are there any suggestions on ways to rid/deter wood peckers before too much damage is done to our house siding? Also, are there particular tree markings that we would see that are a part of the tree mortality program? Thank you.

    Thanks, Sandi,
You almost went on my street, Hoopa Circle off Shoshone. I drive that route a bit, so I recognized a lot. Great stuff.

I have a Verizon cell phone. All works great until the power goes out. The tower allows calls to be made for a few hours (The length of time seems to vary – I assume it is running on a battery backup). Then the service drops to only being able to send text messages. If the outage in days long then texts do not go through either. Now admittedly, I’m very far from the tower on Bigfoot Circle. So that may have some impact on my experience. But my AT&T land line always works.

I would suggest a cell phone. Verizon has put up a tower at Bigfoot Circle. It works great.

Abicat, There are no other land line providers in BTV. Only AT&T. Of course, you can have a internet based phone line if you have internet access. However it will not work without power. Where the old school AT&T land line will work without power. And over the 23 years we have been in Big Trees, it has worked through all sorts of storms. It is surprisingly robust. Carl
