Received an email this week from a friend who owns a cabin on Sierra Parkway in Unit 9. She gave me permission to post her email:

"I saw a mountain lion today just after 6:00 p.m. I was reading in the air chair on our lower deck and happened to glance up to see it about 60 feet away on the logging road, apparently having come from your property.  S/he was sniffing the rear end of our deer statue, and raised its front left paw to touch the deer's haunch.  I compared the cougar's body length with that of the deer; it was 1.5 X as long (not counting the long tail, which had a black tip; the tail was about half the length of the main body). The shoulder height was about the back of the deer statue.  It turned its head towards me, so I saw it full face.  It did not hurry or seem alarmed, just observed me.  I was murmuring under my breath, "Oh, my gosh!" It was breathtakingly beautiful, standing there in full sunlight. It investigated the base of the statue, then proceeded up to the head, where it rubbed its face up against the antlers (scent marking). It then proceeded up the road a little way and went down hill between the metal bench and the dogwood tree.  I saw it for three or four minutes.  I noted the time on my watch when it left, 6:08 p.m.

I wished I had had a camera, since it was in full sunlight and completely unobstructed from my line of sight. It left an indelible imprint in my mind; I kept telling myself to observe carefully and compare sizes accurately.

I have never seen a mountain lion before.  What a gift!

We actually measured our deer statue and decided that the cougar's body was about four and a half feet long (add another two feet + for the tail) and it stood about two feet high at the shoulder."

Spoke to Golden State Cellular today and they do have prepaid plans now and also said they will be putting in a tower to provide service to the BTV area.

Do a google search for:  "att free microcell"

I paid for mine, but doesn't mean you can't try to get a free one.

Check the at&t website for rebates.  I paid $150 after rebate from AT&T.
Install was smooth and it works works as expected.
I did have to physically move the microcell from the closet where the the cable modem was installed to a location closer to the exterior of the house so the GPS would sync up.

I am trying to get an idea of prices paid for anyone having an ATT Microcell. Was it easy to install and problem free operation?
    Thanks

A search for "Microcell" using the "HomeHelpSearch…" above will find lot of info on microcells.

Heard a few days ago that on Monday, Golden State Cellular will begin selling minutes without a fixed monthly fee.  Buy a phone and some minutes, and you won't have a bill again until you have to buy more minutes.

Probably a good solution for weekenders and part-timers.

Our Verizon service has never worked at our cabin but we have always received service in Arnold.

Sorry. Our network extender does not seem to work. The red "SYS" light just flashes indicating that it isn't connecting to Verizon All other lights blue.

To vnj: I saved my network extender just in case Verizon/Golden State worked things out.  So let me know if it's working again!  I'll keep fingers crossed.

My iPad 3G with Verizon service has never worked up there, sounds like maybe it will now.

Looking forward to giving it a try.

We have always been able to use our Verizon phones in Arnold at the shopping center, ACE area, etc.  For a while our femtocell (network extender) allowed us to use our Verizon cellphones at the cabin in BTV until whatever happened between Verizon and Golden State happened, and service was discontinued.    We will be back up in a couple days and will reinstall the femtocell and report.  Sadly I am not optimistic.

This is not a Verizon phone and up until yesterday it had never worked until I got down the hill, out of the Golden State coverage area.  This is a device that uses the Verizon mobile data service, not digital voice.  The Verizon coverage map still shows no coverage in our area but I tested it again today and it does indeed work.
