    they delivered on monday.  driver was nice. arrived early. they only have a dump bed which would have put the wood a little further away than normal when guys just huck it out the back of their truck.  the driver opted to help me so that's a plus for them.  wood seemed good and dry.

    i haven't bought almond in years but 90% of it was limbs, mostly not straight (boomerangs)  that weren't very large.  a very tiny portion was actually split rounds. harder to stack tightly so my guess is my chord of oak, while it measures the same, has much more wood than this almond.  i never thought to ask ahead of time but i'm wishing i had. i would have preferred split rounds.

    is this typical with almond? if so it will be my last time getting it.

    Is the Ramsey fire at Gann's Meadow what you're seeing? That fire started I believe a year ago yesterday. Here's a link to an article about that fire with a map included of the burn zone:

    With kids in and out of the cabin for snowplay and cocoa, we loved having a storm door on the cabins we leased.  Now that we own, we tried last winter without a storm door and it was more drafty than we'd like.  Any advice on a good storm door?  Ones to avoid?

    I called Ron at AlCal but he's not currently stocking any doors as he didn't like the quality of the last ones he tried but might be able to order for me if I find one I want.  Anyone in storm door heaven?

    Al Cal in Arnold ordered and installed ours. We've been very happy with the retractable screen, especially in the snow season.

    Some thing must be taking up to the new code, but for small repairs the answer is no.

    I think I was a little too naive about the need for a permit.  i suppose I should call them in ans ask to check it out and hope that they can permit it in retrospect.

    .the piece we added is just about at ground level with what i was told was the required amount of clearance ensured below the joists.  The Spa was installed by a Professional and  should be fine.

    You've given me things to follow up on though.

    Even for a deck "repair" you should check with the county building department.
    If the deck collapsed because snow slid off the roof and sheered it off, would that be considered a "repair"?

    Extending a deck and adding a hot tub on top of it…that's a real heavy load…check with the county.

    IF your deck is more than 20 years old, you'll need to reduce the maximum railing opening to 4 inches so that a child doesn't accidentally hang themselves….a bit morbid, but that's why the code changed from 9" to 6" then to the current 4".

    Other critical factors are how high off the ground the deck is, how it is attached to the house, and if the members are pressure treated.  Deck railing height has increase from 36" (old) to the current 42".

    Bottom line, check with the county in any case…they will actually make sure you build it up to code and that it safe for your family and friends. ….oh, and your insurance company will certainly want to know if you took out permits, if there is ever an accident claim.  Best Wishes!

    Steve, I missed the part stating that extensions of existing decks don't need permits. Did the county state that? I always assumed that any new construction required a permit, and that part of that permit process was a plan review to determine both safety and code compliance. I would hate to see a "under the radar" non-permitted project result in injury. My apologies if I'm off base here.
