When did the new tower start working?

It's been quite a while now. You can check the Verizon coverage map here:

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/support/coverage-locator

Select voice & messaging and put in our ZIP code. Then zoom in and pan around. The coverage map is pretty accurate but some of the areas shown are spotty. Any coverage up here is 3G and very slow.

Is it just me or does it seem like they didn't jump on this Rim Fire very quickly? I heard a little "blip" about it the day it started and it sounded like they weren't very concerned about it. Just before I heard about the Rim Fire we also had a fire near Vallicito. They quickly put the Valliceto fire out. Seems to me like they didn't throw very many resources at the Rim Fire until it was too late.

I have seen brochures at big trees park which have good guides on the local plants.
The tour guides are generally very knowledgable. I talked to an older gentleman
Who in twenty minutes gave me a tremendous amount of info on trees.

When did the new tower start working? I am thinking about a Wilson amplifier, then
I will stop trying if that doesn't work. I was told to take signal measurements to see if an
Amplifier is worth it. I will people know if it works. I know it does for my bro-inlaw

We're trying to decide whether or not to come up this weekend. I am hearing the smoke is pretty thick. Is it bad enough that outdoors activities are out / windows need to be closed / etc?

It varies a lot.  This morning it was so thick it looked like fog and ash was falling.  This afternoon the air is pretty clear.  Who knows what tomorrow may bring.  Keep an Eye on the Rim Fire Status (upper left of the page).  They've brought in a bunch of additional resources so maybe they'll get it under control soon.

Try Needle In Motion @ 795-8123, in the building across the street from the fire station.  1st floor, on the right hand side of the building.

I believe she sells some sewing supplies. Otherwise, in Angels Camp there's Country Cloth right by the high school on 49.

    How do I know?  Dana's a quilter.

Hello all, I tried to use a verizon network extender and the use of it is still not licensed in GSC. Hope that helps.

After 2+ years of Verizon shutting off my network extender, I yanked it out and sold it on ebay for $195….not bad since I bought it on a promo deal for $100.  I use my cell phone to make outbound calls on Skype…so the only limitation is receiving inbound cell calls.  The family all have iphones, so texting works no problem…

Once in  a while I will get a signal at our cabin on Hokan Circle…but very erratic.

Smoke is pretty heavy this morning. The Rim fire has increased to 54,000 acres from 15,000 acres yesterday. It is expected to continue to grow north and east with no containment in sight. So I would expect the smoke to continue to increase for us also.

In case you didn't notice, I've added a Rim Fire Status module on the left of the page.  These reports are coming from the incident information system at:

Summer in the Sierras is grand except for the dreaded fire season.  Our youngest son has been fighting wild land fires, one-after-the-other across Northern California.  So every morning, along with reading emails, newspapers etc, I check the status of the fire he's battling.  (www.inciweb.org)

I found a link that provides valuable information should we ever have a fire threatening our home with tips that I would never have thought of.

I use Verizon, have a place on Hoopa Circle, and my cell phone works fine.

I'm pretty sure the "new" cell tower is on Summit Level Road. Some parts of BTV get cell coverage and some don't. Very spotty coverage at best.
