It’s my understanding that it can be used on all dogs however I have seen operator injury result it was attached to my neighbor’s Great Dane.
allenParticipantLostbruce, is this some kind of tracking collar? I have a Sport Dog GPS collar for one of my big dogs, but my wife has two small dogs (about 7 1/2 pounds each). Will this high tech gadget work on small dogs?

allenParticipantThanks. Do you know who to contact to change my address? I called someone once and they said it was taken care of. OK, great but I don’t think it is. I also told the county our address is up here now and they said it was taken care of too. But there seems to be a communication gap between the county and whoever send out the bills! No problem with my property tax bill though! 🙂
lostbruceParticipantThere is a new high tech gadget that helps dog owners keep track and control their dogs so that the dogs, the owners and local widllife don’t get hurt. It’s called a “Leash”, prounounced “L-E-A-S-H”. Let me know if you need a demonstration.
FlyfishrParticipantRecent article on Gizmodo on coyote safety:
http://indefinitelywild.gizmodo.com/how-to-keep-your-pets-safe-from-coyotes-1586728445/+barrettCoyotes are like scary intelligent. They will often prey on dogs by one member of a pack luring a dog to chase it, then it will lead the dog to the rest of the pack.
They were very active in the area during the drought of the late 80s to early 90s. A number of times I would encounter cat (and once dog) parts in the open area behind my cabin near the park. With the current drought I expect more will be moving into developed areas in search of food and water, so be sure not to leave either out.BootstrapParticipantWe received our bill in late March and it was due in mid April. Our last name starts with B.
WestlyeParticipantLate May, we attempted to hike Woodchuck Basin but lost the trail due to lingering snow. Three weeks later, the snow has melted and the wild flowers are out in bloom. While googling WB info, I came across the wonderful video that was posted by none other than our own Big Trees Tech Joe. This is a grand little hike and I highly recommend it.

allenParticipantThis morning (Thursday) my dogs tried to attack a coyote pup on Hokan Circle. I run them around the circle in the mornings with my scooter. They are large dogs so I’m not worried about them being attacked, but this morning I heard a very loud squealing and spotted a coyote. I’m pretty sure it’s the same one with the pups that was near Highway 4 on Ottawa a month or so ago.
One of my dogs wears a GPS collar and both dogs usually stick together. I found both of them attacking a coyote pup and the mother coyote was whaling away. I managed to get my dogs away from the pup long enough for it to run into a culvert.
So if you are near Hokan Circle, I would suggest being careful with small dogs or cats. The coyote didn’t seem aggressive, but rather protecting its pups.
Attached is a map of Hokan Circle and the area where I saw the mother coyote and the area where my dogs tried to attack the pup. PLEASE remember these coyotes are in their natural habitat and should NOT be harmed.

allenParticipantWhen do they send out the fire prevention tax bills? They had my address wrong last year and I’m thinking they might have it wrong again. If they do it in alphabetical order, our last name starts with an ‘H.’ I always pay it online so I don’t have a record in my check book.
Thanks for any info.

allenParticipantThere seems to be more coyotes this year than usual. Several people have seen the coyote and its pups on Ottawa near Highway 4, my wife and I have both seen one on Hokan Circle and another one on Jibway. They don’t look aggressive, but I certainly wouldn’t let a small dog outside by itself. Glad to hear the little dog will be fine. And thanks for the heads up.

allenParticipantYeah, the whole thing is very unfortunate. They could have used several outlets in the area to give away their phone books. Like Big Trees Market, there’s the Buy & Sell and several real estate brochures in front of the store. If you want one, it’s free and you can take one. They should have done something like that with their Yellow Pages. I think just about everyone up here goes to Big Trees Market, at least occasionally. Another possibility would have been Camp Connell if they had Donna’s permission.
If I wasn’t so busy right now, I would try to deal with the county and see what they have to offer. I’m sure 90% or more of the Yellow Pages were left on county property.
I don’t think this Dave Kaun guy “gets it.” Opt out? I never “opted in” so why should I “opt out?” People that only come up a few times a year have no idea about “opting out” and they shouldn’t need to know.
Anyway, I have 16 pounds of Valley Yellow Pages ready to send to Dave Kaun. Should cost a little over $9 if I can send them “media mail.”
According to USPS, media mail features:
1. Delivery in 2 to 8 business days
2. Perfect for sending used books
3. Intended for educational materials
4. Commercial pricing availableThese Valley Yellow Pages are definitely used books, and probably educational too. I’m not sure about the educational part since I haven’t opened one yet. 🙂
I may still call the county but I have a hunch they won’t be overly eager to help!
BootstrapParticipantWe were up last weekend and our neighbor took his small dog out about 10:30pm on El Camino Bootstrap. The dog stepped off the deck just out of sight of my neighbor to do his thing. Some “thing” bit down on the little guy right between his shoulders and he let out a scream that could break glass. Everyone immediately came out of both cabins and the dog managed to break loose and sprinted back up the deck stairs and into the house, still screaming. A quick search of the are turn up no wild beast.
A late night visit to the vet revealed a deep puncture wound that missed his lung by 1/4 of an inch. There were also abrasions opposite the wound that indicated a large bite pattern. We are certainly all glad that he will make a complete recovery.
So, just wanted to give a heads up to those with pets ….be extremely aware of what might be lurking near your cabin. In my 23 years of coming up to Snowshoe Springs, I have never experienced this close of an encounter. I take my small dog out on a leash in the same area every night, so I will definitely be on guard from now on.
It’s just a reminder that our homes up here are truly “in the wild” which existed long before us and demands our respect.
vnjParticipantWhat wonderful news. We too saved our network extender. I hope it will work. A chance for cell service in the cabin once again! Awesome.
mtndadParticipantIt’s to bad you had to pick them up. If there are no books left on the street, there will be no incentive for the sherif, Big Trees Home Owners or the City Council to act.
In an emil from the company they said they would be picked up by Wednesday (come and gone). This admits to there responsibility.
Where to from here? I have no idea.
allenParticipantNone on Hokan Circle. I picked them up this afternoon and will send them to Mr. Kaun tomorrow if I can mail them as “media mail.” Signing up to “opt out” is total BS and if they think they can get away with this, we’ll see.
If I have to send them non-media mail, then perhaps small claims court will determine who pays the postage and gasoline I used to pick them up. A nice trip to Fresno would be nice anyway. My cousin lives in the area and my mother and father are both buried in Exeter, CA (south of Fresno).
