As of today, What I miss most from the old site is the road conditions. I wanted to check if the pass got closed today and was about to come to BigTreesTech to find out… hopefully I’ll have that back up before real snow.

There was a “committee” of women that put together “River Memories.” At the beginning of the book it says:

    The River Book Committee:

    Jan (Renna) Caster
    Roxanne (Risden) Desanto
    Cathy (Richards) Garthwaite
    Lorri (Eastman) Hulsenburg
    Kristi (Emmrich) Larrance
    Diann (Hicks) Neilson
    Mari Lee Renna

    Copywright 1998
River Memories – Board’s Crossing, CA
    All Rights Reserved

I’m sure there were only a few printed but there are some floating around in the Camp Connell, Dorrington and Arnold area.

Glad I put up a security camera recently. Looks like any of us that are up at any given time will have to keep a sharper eye out.

Yes, the book you are looking for is “River Memories.” Many of the people that owned “camps” at Boards Crossing wrote “memories” about the river and Boards Crossing and someone compiled a book. I don’t recall the name of the person that compiled it but might be able to find out. I don’t think it was ever “published” except for local people, probably those that lived or owned camps at Boards Crossing.

The other book is “Traveler of the Crossroads; The Life of Adventurer Nicol Smith” as someone already mentioned. Boards Crossing was Nicol’s summer retreat and he sold much of the land to campers, hence the name “camps.” The large cabin and guest house next to the river was Nicol’s.

Nicol Smith was born on Jan 10, 1910 and died on May 18, 1995.

I believe the name of that book is “River Memories”. I had a copy, but donated it to the Bear Valley Library.

Does anyone know if the Lake Alpine Lodge Restaurant is open this weekend and/or when they plan to close for the season?

Thanks, tortuga, for the tip. I have spoken with her (Julie), and she indicates she has lots of seasoned oak. I plan to get a cord; if anyone else would like to get firewood from this person, and split the $40 delivery fee with me, I would appreciate it. My phone is 795-6746.

Try this one, three of us each got a cord and split the delivery fee. Doesn’t need to be your next door neighbor, just another BTV cabin. We got ours delivered about 3 weeks ago, they were busy, but still had wood…

    oak $260 almond $270
delivery $40, up to 3 cords, 3 addresses is fine

I’ve tried calling Douglas Flat number above, who delivered split oak to us last fall. At first, the call would fail. Today, there is a message saying, “The person you are trying to reach is not currently accepting calls. Please try again later.” I was not happy with the oak I got from him (didn’t seem at all seasoned to me; only burned on a really hot fire), but thought I’d give him another try because…

I’ve also been unsuccessful in getting a return call from Jas, who delivered beautiful, dry, good-burning oak to me this spring. But I’ve left multiple messages for him by phone, and tried contacting him via email, but he will not respond.

What gives? Why is is so difficult to get oak this year, when it seemed abundant last year? Even just a few months ago. I’ve got a message in to Zwart’s, Hopefully they will respond. I prefer to deal locally, but so far, no joy.

But, there is another book, I believe it was personally published, that focused much more on the local area. I don’t recall the title but I do not believe it is available on the open market.

I just saw this on BTV’s Facebook page and thought i’d post it over here.

I just found out that there are some burglars in the area! One house on Shoshone near Arapaho Ct was broken into twice in the last two weeks! According to the homeowner, the burglars “kicked in our under house locked storage door and stole a generator and chainsaws. They returned the next day to steal snowboards & fishing poles but were interrupted by a person working in the area. They are aggressive criminals.” Let’s all keep and eye on our neighbors and please share this information with fellow property owners.
