Thank you to all the firefighters who risk their lives to keep us safe.

On Shastan (BTV Unit 1) we can't get Verizon voice, but can consistently get Verizon texting, although you have to be in the right part of the house to do it.

Allen – Fire Resources have been and are currently all over this fire.  The hills/mtn are steep, the landscape is extremely dry, temps have been high, winds shift and lightening strikes have hard hit the Sierras with fires.  There's no conspiracy between Mother Nature and Government Agencies to extend fires and cause humongous expenditures which may result in additional taxation.  I'm pretty confident that the citizens of Pine Mtn and Groveland are extremely appreciate of the efforts made to control this disastrous fire.

The Rim fire doubled again in size over night, is up to 100,000 acres now. The smoke here lifts late afternoon but then settles down again during the night, having to sleep with windows closed most of the night. Smoke is worse this morning than it was yesterday morning.

    Just a couple of thoughts:

-your local library may stock "Laws' guide to the Sierra Nevada"

    – I love phone apps, especially free ones.  I uploaded a music recognition app & googled plant recognition app, leafsnap.com came up.  Oh course this may only work if you have cell or wifi service

When did the new tower start working?

It's been quite a while now. You can check the Verizon coverage map here:

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/support/coverage-locator

Select voice & messaging and put in our ZIP code. Then zoom in and pan around. The coverage map is pretty accurate but some of the areas shown are spotty. Any coverage up here is 3G and very slow.

Is it just me or does it seem like they didn't jump on this Rim Fire very quickly? I heard a little "blip" about it the day it started and it sounded like they weren't very concerned about it. Just before I heard about the Rim Fire we also had a fire near Vallicito. They quickly put the Valliceto fire out. Seems to me like they didn't throw very many resources at the Rim Fire until it was too late.

I have seen brochures at big trees park which have good guides on the local plants.
The tour guides are generally very knowledgable. I talked to an older gentleman
Who in twenty minutes gave me a tremendous amount of info on trees.

When did the new tower start working? I am thinking about a Wilson amplifier, then
I will stop trying if that doesn't work. I was told to take signal measurements to see if an
Amplifier is worth it. I will people know if it works. I know it does for my bro-inlaw

We're trying to decide whether or not to come up this weekend. I am hearing the smoke is pretty thick. Is it bad enough that outdoors activities are out / windows need to be closed / etc?

It varies a lot.  This morning it was so thick it looked like fog and ash was falling.  This afternoon the air is pretty clear.  Who knows what tomorrow may bring.  Keep an Eye on the Rim Fire Status (upper left of the page).  They've brought in a bunch of additional resources so maybe they'll get it under control soon.

Try Needle In Motion @ 795-8123, in the building across the street from the fire station.  1st floor, on the right hand side of the building.

I believe she sells some sewing supplies. Otherwise, in Angels Camp there's Country Cloth right by the high school on 49.

    How do I know?  Dana's a quilter.
