Any suggestions on where I could get a Christmas tree the week before Christmas? I usually get one at Anderson Tree Farm in Murphys but they’re sold out for the season. Thanks.

Very interesting….I just checked my bill. I’m rarely at my cabin and had THOUGHT that I had no long distance plan…I use a calling card if necessary. But, now looking at my bill, I’ve been paying $5.95 for ATT long distance, then based on the one call I made several months ago, $.42 per minute! Yikes! Thanks for your post, carlshome!! Time for a call to ATT!

    K6OAK,

I started this thread. It is interesting that you are getting a different answer than I got from AT&T regarding their cost per minute for long distance without a plan on your land line. And I agree, that the price in Fremont should be the same for Dorrington. So which is right??? Anyone out there: if you have No long distance plan on your land line, what are you being charged per minute?

K6OAK: At my Bay Area home I installed Ooma as described by one of the other posts on this thread. It requires an internet connection, and you can keep your old land line phone number. Cost per month is under $5. It works great and I recommend it.

For my cabin in Dorrington I have no internet (I prefer to be away from everything). Plus the land line always works even when the power is out. Which in my location seems to happen a lot with several occasions being without power for 2-5 days at a time.

I just checked with ATT because I too would like to cut my landline bill down a bit. The guy told me that without the long distance plan it would be 42 cents/minute! I asked him to verify that and he did with his boss. Now that was in reference to our Fremont home, but I would think their rates would be the same throughout CA.

On the battery life issue, I was pretty annoyed when the batt indicator for each camera dropped to 50% after just a few (cold) days on my Arlo cameras. Corresponding with the company was helpful, however. Apparently there is a bug that causes the icon to show low battery life in temp below 30 degrees or so, but actually the battery is still good. So, sure enough, once it warmed up, the battery icon showed full again. OK.

Yes, the Arlo cameras have an App so you can view them all on your phone, or on their website from computer. You can set the controls independently for each one, as far as how sensitive to motion you want it to be, and turn them on or off with the flick of a phone button, or set them on a schedule.

As for the neighbors, yes, if you point it in the direction of a neighbors property, you would pick up their motion. But by adjusting the parameters you could optimize so it mostly only triggers on your property. You can easily readjust position and pose with magnetic mounts. I had to fiddle a little to make sure passing cars wouldn’t make it go off.

The magnetic mounts would not work well in trees however. One avalanche or branch falling and it would knock off the camera. You would either need to tie it up there somehow, or search for a new mount. There are many accessories available, including silicon skins to cmamaflague it. Some of the mounts may allow panning, but I don’t have that. As for zoom, you can manually zoom in on the images since they are HD.

It is amazing how diverse cams are getting. But a couple of Qs to all of you: (1) While your cameras view your property, curious, does it also catch your neighbor’s property, as well as their house? And (2) Do your cameras have the ability to pan the surroundings?

For those who are having trouble finding Insurance my Farmers agent who was not aloud to insure my Dorrington house found Rogers Insurance Services for me. They had no problem insuring my house. Their phone # is (855)615-6815 and (925)365-3200. I hope this helps.

Remember you can turn on ‘Wifi calling’ on many cell phones and use your cell phone at your home just like a regular phone as long as yo have an internet connection. No added charge with most carriers. I have ATT and there is no signal anywhere in Arnold/Big Trees so this works great for me.

For an iPhone go to: Settings/Phone/Wifi Calling – and turn it one

Do you snowmobile? Would you like to try it?

There is a forum to help keep you up to date on what’s going on with the snowmobile community on the Highway 4 corridor.

    It’s a facebook page called https://www.facebook.com/BVASR
It’s short for Bear Valley Area Snowmobile Riders. The page follows things like:
    – tailgates at the snowpark or out on the trail
    – Full moon rides
    – Group/social fun rides
    – Latest conditions
    – Legal /regulatory issues that can affect our sport
    – Tech discussions

The idea behind the page is for folks who like to snowmobile have a way to set up group rides, share stories, pictures and status on the current conditions on the highway 4 corridor.

Thank you very much for that information. I hope it assists others in our community to more closely scrutinize their billings, and we can rout this cheater out if that is, in fact, what is going on.

It would help some of the rest of us if we knew which company is possibly billing eroneously.

    Thanks.
