KeymasterThe big blow just went by our place on Kenshaw a little bit ago so I’m guessing the’ve plowed it all by now.

ParticipantThanks, Joe!

KeymasterWhen I came up Boards Crossing to Kenshaw at about 1:30 PM it was an unplowed slushy mess. Even with 4wd, new snow tires and weight in the back of my truck it was squirrely. It looked to me like none of Kenshaw had been plowed other than where driveway plows had cleared off parts of the road.
I’ll be going out again after a while and will report back.

ParticipantAny update on the roads. I have some guests coming up tonight before my arrival and want to give them a heads up if the roads are really bad. Wondering about Boards crossing and Kenshaw Wy. Thanks.

ParticipantReply from Public Works:
Good morning Mr. ,
I have corresponded this morning with the Road Crew Foreman in the Arnold area. 2 snow plows arrived in Big Trees first thing this morning. There were trees down on the roadways in Arnold that had to be cleared by the other road crew members prior to heading up to Big Trees Subdivision.
Additional snow plows are in the area now.
Thank you,
Brenda Johnson

ParticipantI think if you study all of the images you can figure out which are frozen from last week or earlier. I appreciate having the views even if maintenance is becoming an issue.

ParticipantI’m sure you noticed that as of 9:00AM our roads were not plowed. Where I am the snow was =/- 10 inches deep and slush.
I complained to Mr. Oliveria and the Snow Plow crew.
Here are the email addresses:

snowplower@co.calaveras.ca.usMaybe if we all complain, something will get done.

Over 10 inches snow on roads (Boards Crossing, Snowshoe Thompson and Kohota Lane) in Big Trees Sub Division!
7:00AM no plows, Deep ruts and slush to get to the highway. Dangerous and difficult even in 4 wheel.
Let’s get the county road department to start at 6:00 AM so we can get to work and school.”

ParticipantHi,
I know there have been previous discussions about cameras before. Today the BTV tech site looked like very little snow so I didn’t order a plow. Got here about 4:00 PM to find over a foot of snow in my driveway. Had to shovel over 1.5 hours before I could safely attempt driving my 2012 4WD Explorer up my fairly steep 50 ft driveway into garage.
I think it is time to get my own camera surveying my own driveway.
Question: Do these wireless cameras require that I leave a computer on? (Worried that power fluctuations would shut computer down.)
If not, how do they work?
Any recommendations for decent quality systems?

ParticipantI use Spike Spiders on my Prius as well. One thing to keep in mind: re-torque the bolts on the mounting disks whenever you get your car back from service. The guys at the service don’t always use the proper torque when they reinstall them after they rotate your tires. I didn’t at first, and the whole disk plus the spider pulled off one of the wheels in the middle of Highway 4 on the way up. Luckily I was able to retrieve it and remount it, but it was a chilly, messy affair with passing cars spraying slush on me (many thanks for my Aussie drover’s coat!).

KeymasterI also have Spyders for our Prius. I’ve only used them once but they went on and came off easily. We kept our old 96 4×4 as a winter standby.

ParticipantI have the Thule K-summit chains. They provide excellent traction. They are super easy to put on (2-3 min/tire) but had a little trouble removing the clamp for the lug. Just carry a pair of channel locks and you’ll be fine.

ParticipantI used my Spikes Spiders when I came up on the Sunday after Christmas. They went on fairly easily ( less than 3 mins) and came off just as easily. I normally would have just been lazy and not put on chains to navigate the BTV neighborhood to get to our house. But they were so easy to slip on and off.
The most time spent on these chains was in installing the mounting disk and getting the right combination of spacers prior to coming up. The ownly downside is needing to keep the mounting disk on during the season.
The vendor had sent the recommended spacer combination recommendation, but I still needed to make a change for Expedition.
One thing I would recommend if you decide to order a set, is to physically determine the lug nut size for your vehicle as my chains were sent with a standard size lug nut for my car, when I actually needed a larger size. After contacting the US authorized vendor, he sent me the correct size via express mail.
So far, a great product.Sandi
