ParticipantThanks for the history lessons guys! We’ve wondered what was there since they tore it down. It was there one weekend and gone the next……..except the chimney which remained for a few years.

ParticipantThat’s what I remember too. The Whiskey River was owned by Robin Williams brother as I remember. Lemke bought it and then tore it down around 2001?

ParticipantWhen I moved here in 1978 it was a bar/restaurant called the The Clipper Mill. It later changed hands and became The Whiskey River Inn, another bar/restaurant. I believe before the Clipper Mill it may have been The Ebbetts Pass Inn or something similar.

ParticipantWe bought our place in 1994 (July). At this location (see picture) the was “something” there. Within a year it was torn down. We were busy working on our cabin and never visited “whatever” was there. Our part time cabin neighbor thinks it may have been a bar. Anyone remember what was there?

ParticipantI agree with “allen”. It’s a sneaky “tax” and as such should be nullified. As I understand the law, any new/additional taxes must be approved by the voters!
allen
ParticipantEither way, it’s a “tax,” not a fee. That makes it illegal no matter what it is used for.

KeymasterThat seems a little silly… it’s a fire PREVENTION fee, not a fire confrontation fee. The real question should not be whether any funds went toward putting out fires but rather, did any funds go toward preventing fires?

I recently sat down with Capital Public Radio to discuss my opposition to California’s Fire Prevention Fee. During my interview, the reporter asked me how–considering California’s struggle with fires this year–I could be opposed to the fee.
Simple: Not a dime of the fire fee money is going towards putting out fires. And the program provides no new funding for trucks, hoses or helicopters. In fact, the program may have even delayed grants to local prevention programs.
Jim Miller of the Sacramento Bee recently discovered that millions of dollars of fire fee funds have not been spent, despite the fact that fires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres this year. He also found the state fee may be undermining local firefighting fundraising efforts.
My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes due to fire and I support our firefighters, but taxing Californians for a service they’re not benefiting from is unfair and–as a class action lawsuit contends–it’s likely illegal too.

ParticipantThey inserted the wrong envelope in some of the property tax bills so, yes, that address is incorrect. They should have sent you a follow up yellow postcard noting the error and the correct address in San Andreas. You are correct, address your own envelope as follows:
Barbara Sullivan
Treasurer & Tax Collector
Calaveras County Government Center
891 Mountain Ranch Road Suite 2
San Andreas, CA 95249-9713skipamy
ParticipantI started paying my property tax tonight, and saw that the envelope that came with the bill was addressed to:
Barbara M Lopez
Del Norte County Tax Collector
981 H Street, Suite 150
Crescent City, CAI assume this is wrong and that I should address my own envelope to the Calaveras County Tax Collector in San Andreas.
Did anyone else receive this return envelope?

ParticipantI would like to donate some furniture to anyone affected by the Butte fire. Any idea of a local contact that is arranging this kind of thing?
