Yeah, the whole thing is very unfortunate. They could have used several outlets in the area to give away their phone books. Like Big Trees Market, there’s the Buy & Sell and several real estate brochures in front of the store. If you want one, it’s free and you can take one. They should have done something like that with their Yellow Pages. I think just about everyone up here goes to Big Trees Market, at least occasionally. Another possibility would have been Camp Connell if they had Donna’s permission.
If I wasn’t so busy right now, I would try to deal with the county and see what they have to offer. I’m sure 90% or more of the Yellow Pages were left on county property.
I don’t think this Dave Kaun guy “gets it.” Opt out? I never “opted in” so why should I “opt out?” People that only come up a few times a year have no idea about “opting out” and they shouldn’t need to know.
Anyway, I have 16 pounds of Valley Yellow Pages ready to send to Dave Kaun. Should cost a little over $9 if I can send them “media mail.”
According to USPS, media mail features:
1. Delivery in 2 to 8 business days
2. Perfect for sending used books
3. Intended for educational materials
4. Commercial pricing availableThese Valley Yellow Pages are definitely used books, and probably educational too. I’m not sure about the educational part since I haven’t opened one yet. 🙂
I may still call the county but I have a hunch they won’t be overly eager to help!
BootstrapParticipantWe were up last weekend and our neighbor took his small dog out about 10:30pm on El Camino Bootstrap. The dog stepped off the deck just out of sight of my neighbor to do his thing. Some “thing” bit down on the little guy right between his shoulders and he let out a scream that could break glass. Everyone immediately came out of both cabins and the dog managed to break loose and sprinted back up the deck stairs and into the house, still screaming. A quick search of the are turn up no wild beast.
A late night visit to the vet revealed a deep puncture wound that missed his lung by 1/4 of an inch. There were also abrasions opposite the wound that indicated a large bite pattern. We are certainly all glad that he will make a complete recovery.
So, just wanted to give a heads up to those with pets ….be extremely aware of what might be lurking near your cabin. In my 23 years of coming up to Snowshoe Springs, I have never experienced this close of an encounter. I take my small dog out on a leash in the same area every night, so I will definitely be on guard from now on.
It’s just a reminder that our homes up here are truly “in the wild” which existed long before us and demands our respect.
vnjParticipantWhat wonderful news. We too saved our network extender. I hope it will work. A chance for cell service in the cabin once again! Awesome.
mtndadParticipantIt’s to bad you had to pick them up. If there are no books left on the street, there will be no incentive for the sherif, Big Trees Home Owners or the City Council to act.
In an emil from the company they said they would be picked up by Wednesday (come and gone). This admits to there responsibility.
Where to from here? I have no idea.
allenParticipantNone on Hokan Circle. I picked them up this afternoon and will send them to Mr. Kaun tomorrow if I can mail them as “media mail.” Signing up to “opt out” is total BS and if they think they can get away with this, we’ll see.
If I have to send them non-media mail, then perhaps small claims court will determine who pays the postage and gasoline I used to pick them up. A nice trip to Fresno would be nice anyway. My cousin lives in the area and my mother and father are both buried in Exeter, CA (south of Fresno).

Has anyone seen any of the directories picked up??
They are still in the driveways near me.
Snowshoe, Indian Rock and many more streets.allenParticipantI believe Verizon and AT&T do use different technology. The bigger cities have towers for both, but up here I do believe only Verizon will work. I used to use a TracFone and they lease tower bandwidth from AT&T. I always lost cell service around Angels Camp, maybe a little higher.
mr ellisParticipantI thought that when traveling and “roaming” the access was through a shared agreement, but you may be right.
baritone ukeParticipantGood Day,
Your emails has been shared with upper management.
The fastest way to opt out of any directories delivered to your area is to register at http://www.yellowpagesoptout.org.
Thank you,Dave Kaun
caleachParticipantI received a similar response to my email message to them.
caleachParticipantI am not aware that an AT&T phone will work on a Verizon network anywhere. They use different technology, don’t they?
Stevemr ellisParticipantNot being TOO savvy on these issues, does this Verizon acquisition of Golden State mean that an ATT&T cell account will have access through the Verizon network like elsewhere in the state/country?
skipamyParticipantGary, let us know if the network extender will now work (or work in the near future)! I saved mine, so will set it up if it will work.
allenParticipantI received the same email here. At least they seem to be cooperative.
DogwoodParticipantI think this is awesome news for everyone! Can’t wait for my cell phone to work
